Piano Repair

Problems arise in pianos as in other musical instruments, but there are lots of minor problems which you can fix yourself instead of sending it to a technician for repairs. Consider the following simple tips to repair your piano yourself before sending it to a piano repair gallery.

Piano tuning is very easy if you have a good ear for poor sounds and bad notes. For proper tuning, you must discover the wire that is making problem. You have to use the tuning lever and the mutes for this purpose. There are many pianos that have three wires for a single note, so in tuning such type of pianos you must slip the mute between an outside wire and the wire next to it, and after that hit the key. If the note sounds good, it means that you have found the wire that was making problem, so adjust this wire with the tuning lever accordingly.

It happens sometimes that you are not able to press a certain key of your piano. There is only one reason behind it that something might be blocking its way. If this problem arises, simply open the piano cover, take a flashlight and try to check if there is something in or around the faulty key. When you find it, remove it carefully.

If your piano goes out of tune, then it might be due to a broken wire. If this is the case then remove the broken wire and bring an exact wire from the piano parts center. Piano wires can cut your hands like a knife, so be very careful when you handle these wires. It is highly recommended to wear a goggle when pulling out the damaged wire to guard your eyes.

Piano Repair Tools:

You must equip yourself with necessary piano repair tools if you are planning to do some piano repair. Following are some important piano repair tools that you must possess if you want to repair your piano:

Damper Wire Regulator: This is a small tool used to ease the wire, and to loose the felt bushing which is found around the damper wire. This tool is essential for both new and old pianos.

Specialized screwdrivers: There are many screwdrivers available in the market right now, but you can not use any one of them for the piano. There are two screwdrivers specially used to repair pianos named with action flange screwdriver and double head offset screwdriver. The action flange screwdrivers help you to reach the screws deeply buried in the piano, and the double head offset screwdriver helps you to reach into the tight spots. So, you must possess these two screwdrivers when repairing your piano.

Key Leveling Tools: Key leveling tools include a key drop gauge and a sharp adapter. These tools are used to adjust the dip of the keys. Sometimes, piano users feel that the dip of piano keys is too little or too much when they press the keys. In this situation these tools are used to make all the keys dip uniformly.

Hammer Work Tools: Hammer work tools include jigs, head removers, extractors, drills, butt borers, and shank presses. These tools enable you to remove the old hammers from your piano. Hammer work tools are widely used for square grand pianos.
